Players will come out as gay in Football Manager 2018
An unannounced feature for Football Manager 2018 showed up in the recent beta for the game. It’s an in-game event that has NPCs come out as gay during the game. This will offer a boost to revenue for your club due to the interest from the LGBT community but does little else in-game.
Director of the game, Miles Jacobson, spoke to BBC Sport about the decision to include this event in the game.
“We know from the amount of professionals that there has to be players who are gay but feel they don’t want to come out. I find it weird that it’s still a problem in football so we decided to try and show people that coming out isn’t a big deal and can be a positive thing. I just think it’s crazy that in 2017 we are in a world where people can’t be themselves.”
The event will only happen to players that have been generated, avoiding potential legal issues when making comments on the personal lives on real-life players. In countries where homosexuality is illegal, players simply won’t come out.
Despite the radical change, Jacobson says the response has been positive, which is good.
“I look forward to the day where people who work in football feel 100% comfortable with who they are, whatever their ethnicity, religion, or sexuality.”
