Battlefront 2 Starfighters Being Completely Overhauled
It seems Battlefront 2 will have a lot in the way of upgrades to starfighter combat. Criterion Games, the studio that’s worked on Need for Speed, reported to Polygon that they’ve learned a lot from making cars fun to drive and applied it to both an X-Wing and TIE fighter.
“The camera is probably responsible for more than half of the feel,” said Battlefront 2 executive producer Matt Webster, and general manager of Criterion Games. “It’s about how the camera moves around the ship. This is something that is our bread and butter. It just so happens that it also manifests itself around a car.”
Criterion Games has been involved in the Star Wars universe before, as well. Their work on the PSVR exclusive Star Wars Battlefront: X-Wing VR Mission dipped their feet in the aerial combat world.
Another big part of the experience, according to Webster, is how large the starfighters appear. In his words, they will be “the stars of the show.” This means the starfighters will be much larger on screen in addition to having enhanced camera viewing.
“The fantasy is that I can drift a car around a corner, but the reality is quite different,” Webster said. “Likewise, the fantasy is you’re an ace starfighter pilot. And what we have to give you is that satisfying pickup control experience, but with a ton of control depth for you to master. I think one of the ways that it manifests itself is that the mouse and keyboard feels brilliant. It feels great.”
Battlefront 2 will be releasing for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on November 17, 2017.
