Rime Will Remove Denuvo DRM Once It Has Been Cracked
Denuvo is a bit of a controversial subject, gamers hate it, but publishers love it. For those that don’t know, it’s essentially another piece of DRM that is attached to games which in practice should make them harder for pirates to crack. Although in recent months many games that had this DRM form attached to them, have become cracked, and more and more games are being cracked at a greater speed than ever before.
The product itself has allegedly shortened the lifetime of solid-state-drives due to the excessive amount of date it writes to the drive. Also slipped into the EULA is a line which also annoyed folk “certain files of the anti-tamper technology may remain even after the product is removed from your computer”. Yeah, no that’s kinda annoying.
The way most developers seem to be heading is actually removing the Denuvo DRM once there is a crack out there on the internet, such games as DOOM, INSIDE, 2Dark and Syberia 3 all had Denuvo at launch, but have since removed it from their game due to a crack being leaked online.
One of last week’s big releases, RiME has Denuvo DRM, but their developer has also come out and said that it will remove the DRM package once the game has been cracked.
“We have had discussions about Denuvo internally, and one of the key points of all of those discussions have simply been, we want to ensure the best gaming experience for RiME players. RiME is a very personal experience told through both sight and sound. When a game is cracked, it runs the risk of creating issues with both of those items, and we want to do everything we can to preserve this quality in RiME.
We are very committed to this, but also to the simple fact that nothing is infallible. That being said, if RIME is cracked we will release a Denuvo free version of RiME and update existing platforms.”
“While you don’t have to agree with what I am saying, lets try to remain civil please? We made the decision to use Denuvo to protect the game getting pirated. That is the simple fact of it. Denuvo is not DRM, it is anti tamper software.
As I mentioned in the above post, if RiME gets cracked, we plan to update the versions across all platforms with the Denuvo free version of the game.”
