Discord Hits 45 Million Users
Two years ago, a new VOIP platform entered the scene that took the world by storm. Most other platforms before Discord required you to install a client on your PC, but Discord is different. You can use all the same features via a web browser which many took as a clear advantage over the likes of Ventrilo and TeamSpeak
As of July 2016, Discord had a measly 11 million users. But recent reports suggest that the number is now over 45 million users. Concurrent users has a peak of 4 million, and the daily active usage is 8.9 million. The growth seen by the platform is massive, and I can only assume it dwarfs the numbers of Ventrilo and TeamSpeak in the gaming market now.
More interesting facts were released. 200 million messages are sent a day, monthly messages reaching around 6 billion (I’m pretty sure half of them are in my group chat….). 16 petabytes of voice data are handled every month. To put that into perspective, that’s 320000 installs of GTA V. A lot.
“As Discord grows we are seeing a steady stream of new and growing communities dedicated to specific games and genres, and more people connecting with friends than ever before,” CEO and founder Jason Citron said.
“Because of the way Discord was developed — browser-based and therefore requiring no downloading — it is easier for people to jump right in and start playing/talking/connecting.”
